The Creation Of Animal Portraits Through The Eyes Of An Artist
Animal portrait painting is, not unlike human portraiture except that animals rarely like to pose. An artist will have to give in a lot of effort just to keep an animal from getting distracted. An artist of Wilmington has chosen this field as her specialization. She is a directly related to the Delawares who are famous locally. Her grandfather has this collection of sea and landscape paintings which were actually famous. Unsurprisingly, this female artist was already painting by age 3. She focused her attention mostly on animals when she drew. At age 10 she had her own exhibit at the local library and at age 12 she was already illustrating children’s books. Thanks to her famous Philadelphia teachers, she became acquainted with the world of dance. For many years she did the solo dance work, doing a very convincing death scene one night in a show when she accidentally took a mouthful of kerosene from a lamp.
While it’s true that she does portraits of many different kinds of animals, she mainly places interest on dogs. It is interesting to watch her as she begins doing the dog’s portrait. She makes many sketches while the dog’s owner hopefully and helpfully tries to hold the dog still, or at least in a position somewhat similar from minute to minute.
As she looks for the best pose that would suit the dog, her pencil just continues to fly over the sketchpad with amazing speed. The artist praises the dog for his looks, behavior, and other qualities while she is doing this. She uses props to continuously hold the animal’s attention and keep him interested. In getting pictures for her collection, she asks permission from the owner if she may have some of his photos of the dog duplicated. She matches the different colors in the dog’s hair by cutting snips from the tail, ears, and tummy. These snips are kept for each dog’s file. Afterwards, she concerns herself with the pose of the dog and the composition with a suitable background. The latter is decided based on the animal or type of dog. To get the background for a portrait of a Chesapeake Bay retriever, she had to sit in a duck blind and make the sketches while there.
Animals have their own ways of evaluating things for themselves, she says. One case that proves this is the American pointer who destroyed the worst painting of one artist who was sketching him. The dog had to be given heavy doses of medication afterwards, so it must have been really a bad painting for him to have chewed through it.
If the portrait is that of a beagle or basset, she blends in a paw print with scenery and also puts the kennel club’s identifying symbols on the back. With the help of her own dog, she created abstract backgrounds. But animals frequently do not cooperate. When one of the models ran off with one of the females, she knew that portrait painting was over for the day. It’s normal, but it always seems something unusual happens during a portrait painting of an animal.
